Observations of the Day

Ten things I've learned today....

1) Stroller Derby could be a new Olympic sport. Well, at least for toddlers. This has become one of Kendyll and Carlie's favorite outside activities, and with the weather the way it is right now, it's been a great way to run around and get all tired out for better naptimes. :) We go to the neighborhood basketball court and they race each other all over the place. Carlie woke up asking for "trollers ou-side". 2) Carlie is officially a "peanut". This is her nickname for being so petite and it is true. She had her two year check-up today and she's in the 40th percentile for both height and weight....but the 90th percentile for head size. Hmmm...it kinda sounds like she's shaped like a peanut too.

3) Bubba's really is the best home-cookin' place around. I already knew this, actually, but was reminded again when we had it for lunch today. Nobody makes homemade rolls and chicken like Bubba's. (especially when you're pregnant and starving after a busy morning!)

4) The weather is absolutely perfect right now. Again, not something I really "learned", but something I had to comment on. We spent half of our day outside today and I could have stayed all day. It does make me long for even cooler days coming soon.

5) Labor Day weekend has a profound effect on me, brought on by my mother. It is completely ingrained in my head that Labor Day means fall, and that we put our summer clothes and our white shoes away. I spent the last two days doing just that. I cleaned out both of their closets, got all the fall clothes ready to go, and packed away most of the sandals. And, it is so hard when I know it will still be 90 degrees many days in the coming months. I just can't do it, though! I can't resist the urge to welcome fall and refill my daughters' closets with darker colors and cute fall shoes. (Don't worry...they still wore flip flops to the park today. I'm not competely crazy!)

6) A completely inappropriate #6: Constipation is a part of our children's lives and may always be. Another fact from the doctor visit today. It is really hard to believe that Carlie is following Kendyll's footsteps on this one. Many of you remember the TRAUMA that the pottytraining years (and I do mean YEARS) was for Kendyll and the extreme measure we had to go to for her to be able to progress past diapers. Yep, we're having to start the same thing with Carlie. I guess a daily dose of laxatives could do anyone some good. :) If you need any, come over. We have lots between the two of them...

7) There are nannies who are actually hired to watch the children of stay-at-home-moms in a certain area of Dallas that will remain nameless. Our pediatrician is in this so-called area of Dallas and we ate lunch at the park and played for a while near the office. It is a WONDERFUL park with lots of picnic tables and shade. And, it was a great hour of playing. But, I was astounded that these moms come to the park with their kids and their nanny. These moms then proceed to sit and talk to each other while the nannies push the kids on the swing, pick them up when they fall down, feed them lunch, and do every other "mom job" that I was doing. Very interesting. I have to say I was very thankful to be a "working" mommy today.

8) Floam is absolutely disgusting. Kendyll busted out her floam from the New York Toys R Us excursion. That stuff is the messiest, gooiest, most pointless junk I've ever seen. I still don't even know what you're supposed to do with it. But, just trust me. DON'T buy it for your kids. It's not even worth the five bucks. (Kendyll disagrees, of course, and refused to admit that we should just throw it away. It was obviously so built up in her head that she was in denial of the truth about Floam.)

9) Third pregnancies are quite different than the first two. At least for me. All of a sudden, my stomach has completely pooched and I can't button one pair of pants. Looks like it's maternity from here on out. And, I'm only 14 weeks! The discomfort level is quite a bit higher too. But, I guess that's what happens when your body is stretched and tugged for the third time in the same spots. That has to be bad.

10) I love being a mommy. I can't actually say that this thought goes through my head every single day, if I was to be honest. But, today was one of those days where I really was thankful for my role and for my daily job. Maybe it was seeing mommies who didn't quite see what it was all about. Or, maybe it was just spending time playing outside with my girls and getting to watch them enjoy being children. Or, maybe it was the daily devotional I read this morning on my email that talked about how little our time is with them before they're "too big" for us and how each day should be about them for now. Anyway, I am thankful to be a mommy and I have felt the worth of that job today.

Oh, last thing....a quick birthday shout to two of my college roomies who had the big "3-0" and "3-1" this week. Jenise and Sara, I hope both of your days were wonderful ones!! Happy Birthday!! Love you both!

I was a live-in nanny for a family in PA for 18 months... thankfully they were a wonderful family where both parents worked full-time, but were completely PRESENT with their kids when not working. However, I was exposed to many families with a stay-at-home mom PLUS live-in nanny and it always amazed me... definitely interesting to watch.

One of these families had quadruplets though, so both mom and nanny were worn out at all times!!

Thanks for the shout out...I'll have to fill you in on the day...don't get your hopes up. I couldn't agree more about the floam. We made the mistake once. Thankfully Hollyn hates to have her hands dirty so it didn't last but about 2 days in our house. Oh, and don't be looking at my kids wardrobe anytime soon. We still have white and sandals (and come to think of it I do too). I used to follow all those silly fall rules but then one day I realized, "Hey, this is Texas we're talking about. I'd like to see somebody from NY come down here and just try to follow those rules." Won't work.

BeforeI had a baby who is always constipated did I never imagined I would discuss poop so much. It is part of our nightly table conversation.

Have you read The Nanny Diaries? It gives you an inside look into the lives of stay-at-home moms and their nannies. It is fictional, but based on real experiences.

I was also a "nanny" of some kind for a family with triplets, and I agree! Some families need the extra help even while "staying at home". But, these families today had one or two children at the max. Not sure about that.

Yeah, Sara, I say that I packed summer all away, but they both still have a bottom drawer full of spaghetti strap shirts, shorts, and sandals. It's just too hot for sweaters and pants. So, my kids will look the same as yours, but, I still love cleaning it all out and looking at all the cute outfits we'll get to wear sometime in November...or December. :) Can't wait to hear about your b-day. Call me!

Lynley, I definitely need to read that book. It sounds like an entertaining one!

I feel your pain on the poop issues. That was a nightmare with Avery. However, since raisins are the main staple in Miller's diet I don't think he is going to have the same problem.

Your girls would have a race with their strollers...a little bit of Mark in them:) I like to see that competitive spirit!!

Like I said earlier...I, too, think it's hillarious that stay at home moms need nannies to take their kids to the park so they can talk at the park with other moms...I guess when you have more money than you know what to do with--that's what happens:) I'll never know...

Your constipation issue reminded me of a HILARIOUS story from today. I will have to tell you later!

As far as "stroller derby," too funny! Cass...I don't know what you are talking about MARK being competitive. Have you played Scrabble with Chelsea?? Scary! haha

And I think Carlie is the cutest peanut I have ever seen!!

Love you!

Cort, I try to keep my competitiveness "in the closet". Please don't reveal my psycho need to win at everything. People might start looking at me differently. Ha ha.

(And, I do rock all of you at Scrabble and you know it!)

I was trying to be nice and not mention Chelsea's compulsive need to be the best at everything she tries:) But the cat's out of the bag now, I guess. Oh well.

And Cort--Chelsea's not the only one that's great at scrabble...remember when Chels and I were a team and I came up with the best word in srabble history...pubic...and Chelsea almost didn't let me use it...but then she did and we won...we're the best. (at spades too)

Sounds to me like we need a Sister Scrabble night! I don't think Adam will want to play after what happened the last time he played scrabble with us...but I think it would be fun. Who knows...maybe I can "school" you on some Spades too! I've been a lot playing lately!

I've been a lot playing lately...maybe we could help you with grammar first:)

Yes, the third pregnancy takes on its own form. I felt very old carrying Carrigan, but it really was my healthiest pregnancy (no diabetes or blood pressure issues). I think a fourth child could be manageable in our house, but I just fear what my body would do with another baby in it:).

It's always about 8-10 degrees cooler here, so our first day of low 70s, I was pulling out the fall clothes and packing most of summer away. David said it was like Christmas for me,and I would have to agree!

We'll have to try the stroller racing.

Love the continuing updates...keep it up!

You have prooven yet again that our little girls are very similar.

Mary Elizabeth was 35th for height, 40th for weight, and 75th for head circumference!

Hey, they have to have big heads to hold in big brains!

That nanny thing is crazy!

My youngest, Katie, suffers from the big "C" word and I mean BAD! She will grab hold of something and turn so red and sweat. It's crazy! We give her "Glycolax" and it works WONDERS! We still haven't figured out the exact right dosage though. We're working on it!

Where is Bubba's? I live by Babe's (I heard they're owned by the same people} but Bubbas has more. I want to try it!
My first son had bad constipation issues and my second son has had a few. It was so sad seeing Matthew cry his eyes out just trying to go to the bathroom.
