It's official. I'm a brace face.
It's the weirdest thing I've ever experienced in my life! I feel like my mouth is the size of my entire face. And, it pretty much looks like it too. I'm trying hard not to whine too much, so I won't go into all the negatives about today. But, so far, I'm making it...with alot of mouth wax.
I made the mistake of trying to eat a very soft french fry earlier and realized in that moment that it's not WHAT you are trying to eat. It's the actual motion of eating itself that KILLS! So, I gave up that idea and went for a milkshake instead. Man, I love food TOO much to not be able to eat! That has been the hardest part. Or, maybe the hardest part is the mouth sores I already have after only four hours. Or, maybe the fact that my lips are now twice the size they should be. Or, maybe that I have completely forgotten how to talk with those oversized lips.
Okay, there goes the whining that I wasn't going to do.
Anyway, I promised an update. So, here it is! The braces are on and it's not going to be that bad...right?!
I did get to go on a "last night to eat normal food" date with Mark last night, which was so fun. Grandma Cheri came over and kept the girls and we went to dinner, Starbucks, and Barnes & Noble for as long as we wanted. It was great! So, I will just continue to remember our Italian feast on the patio of Patrizio's when I can't open my mouth to eat tonight.
The best part about today was coming home and showing Kendyll. I was worried that she would freak out---since she does not like change of any kind and has a hard time when I change my hair at all! I walked in and she ran to me and said "Let me see your braces, Mommy!" I showed her and she said "Oh, Mommy, they are so beautiful! I wish you had put color on them, like pink or green." (This is because of Aunt Cailee, who is fifteen and just got finished with her cool colored braces!) Then, later on in the day, she was sitting next to me on the couch. And, she just looked over at me and said "Mommy, I really love your braces." It was so sweet and it was what she truly thought, which meant alot. She doesn't usually "hide" what she thinks about anything, so I was afraid I would hear the tough, ugly truth about what I looked like with this new change. But, she knew just what I needed to hear instead....

okay--so I started thinking I would make fun of how big your lips already were...and then I read Kendyll's response and I teared up! Kid's pure love is so sweet...she thinks you're beautiful no matter what you think...that's too sweet!! Love you Brace Face!
No picture...Not quite ready for that one yet. (Plus who posts pictures of themselves really?! You'll see them this weekend, anyway, Sara...right?)
And, Cas, I know!! I already had PLENTY of lippage without the help of braces!! Don't worry, you can still make fun of me...i'm tough. And they are HUGE, believe me. It helps that I have Kendyll telling me every few minutes I'm beautiful.
(You've gotta get one of these "oldest child" girls...they're great for your esteem!)
I can't wait to see you tomorrow morning at school?!? I may have to make a special trip down to your end of the hallway to see that great smile.
Don't worry...you will get used to them and they will be off in no time at all -- and it will be all worth it to have a pain-free jaw and nice straight teeth!
pictures! pictures! come on, it's not like alot of random people will see it. :)
So sorry! I still remember that pain. It will get better soon. Sweet Kendyll!
good tips: be sure to always have wax to put on those brackets that rub so bad. 2)EVERY time you go to the orthodontist and they take the wire off to change it-insist that you go brush and floss-this will help with staining, demineralization and decay! 3)buy some home fluoride to use-this will also help with decay (i can get you some if needed) 4) buy an "ortho" toothbrush-you may have to search but they have them - let me know if you can't find that too!5) LOTS and LOTS of ice cream!!! good luck-it will go by fast and you will be glad you did it!
I can't wait to see you and your beautiful braces. Did you ever pretend that you had a retainer that was really an unfolded paper clip? I always thought the girls with braces and retainers were so cool...Now you are one of the cool girls too!
Love you! Cortni
So glad that Kendyll loves the braces. That is so cute and sweet. PLEASE, PLEASE post a picture. Kristin posted a picture of her new bangs....now let's see those braces. I'll even post a pic of myself if that will help:)
OOPS...Sorry KristEn.
I really don't know if I can do the picture thing, guys. That is just weird. :) This weekend, I will see my whole family, so maybe we'll take a group picture that will include my mouthy self, and I'll post that...alot of you saw me today already, so I'm sure you already got a good chuckle! :)
Meredith, thanks for the pointers! You're going to be handy to have around during these 18 months! My ortho gave me a sonic ortho toothbrush, flouride, and about three gadgets for flossing, picking, etc. etc. Now, if I can just make myself be disciplined to do all of that! Man!
you have a great orthodontist for them to do all that already-you would be surprised at how many ortho offices strap on that metal and give NO help on keeping things clean. Speaking of-probably want to have your teeth cleaned every 3-4 months instead of every 6 and have the wires off! we will talk about this more in person!
So sweet! I wanna see your puffy lips and cute braces! I bet they look great!
Isn't it funny what kids think is beautiful? When I had to get a crown last year and felt like my teeth looked like a pirate, Mary Alice said, "Oh mom! Your crown is so beautiful! It is golden!" She kept asking to see it again and again and bragging to everyone that her mom had a beautiful gold tooth.
After reading all of these comments, I just want to give one more plea for a picture. If you must go with a family picture, make sure we can see your pretty smile!
Oh yes, and after reading Mere's comments/hints, I have one more to offer. I had those clear braces. You have to really watch out when you eat certain things (to avoid staining your o's-I'm assuming they are clear too?) Lay off the mustard, nacho cheese, and anything that seems extremely bright and unnatural looking. That was a down side to those clear braces. I remember having to keep them REALLY clean, b/c otherwise my teeth looked like they had little yellow spots on them. Of course, I was thirteen or so. I'm sure you will do a much better job than I did.
Now go get a camera and post your picture-please?
