Happy Memorial Day!
So, today, was a family day---which served as a much needed break from work (for Mark), VBS (yes, it's "that" time again for me), school for the girls, and busyness of life.
It began with a family trip to Target and Toys R Us early this morning for new backyard toys, and a climbing set for Abby Kate. I am a giddy mommy when the day starts off at Target. :)
Kendyll and I spent the afternoon shopping at Sam Moon and having grape soda together...nasty stuff, but I love that girl and it's what she wanted. :) We got home with new flip-flops and jewelry (also making for a happy mommy)...and walked into find a sleeping Daddy and a very cool climbing gym in our living room.
The next stop was the neighborhood pool for the first time this year. (Apparently, a lot of neighbors had the same idea...which made it fun for our girls.)
These are what my favorite days consist of. :) I hope your holiday was happy too...

The Chicago Getaway
Look at this fountain! The "face" you see is painted on a wall, and a fountain stream comes right out of the kid's mouth. And, this sculpture was VERY cool. Mark had a hard time taking a picture while looking into the mirrored art, which eventually made me laugh so hard, I almost peed in my pants.

So many surprises!!
Last weekend, we celebrated Mother's Day at home on Saturday, with a "Daddy & His Girls Spoil Mommy Day". They made me breakfast, went to Lakeshore for some mommy's day crafts, and left me ALONE all day. Then I was treated to a yummy steak dinner at home. The best surprise was my celebration cake...which included Mother's Day and birthday in one. :)
We spent the rest of Mother's Day with Mark's side of the family, including the whole "Abilene gang" who was here to support sweet Aunt Carol as she had major back surgery last week. Grandmother, Carol, Chuck, Kristen, George, and Carrie---it was SO fun to have you in our neck of the woods for a few days! How did I not get ONE picture of the time together?? I did get this one of Grandma and Pops with all the kiddos...
Now, when Mark told me that we were leaving on a surprise vacation this week, I gave him somewhat of a disappointing reaction. I realized all the things I was missing...and then he gently reminded me that he had worked hard to surprise me and that I should probably be excited. Oops... :)
Anyway, one of the things I was "missing" was celebrating with Kendyll after her last day of school was finished. So, we moved the "celebrating" up a couple of days, and gave her a whole night of honor as the big kindergarten graduate. We picked her up after school, and told her she had FIVE surprise stops on our adventure:
Stop #1: A special gift. We gave her a new "big girl" Bible and Bible cover. She thought that was it, but then we had her look up...and we were sitting outside James Avery.
(By the way, she is the BEST kid to surprise. The reaction she gives is so great and makes a mommy and daddy feel really good. :) She got her "giddiness" from her daddy...He does the same thing! She also LOVES to hide her eyes, and she admits that she only peeked once all day! Here's the pose we had from her repeatedly...)
She got to pick out her first charm for a brand new charm bracelet. The girl was so giddy. And, she now has a cute butterfly hanging from her arm. We said that was perfect because it represents how much she "blossomed" this year into something new. The plan is to add one charm each of her twelve years...
Here is the reveal...
And, the makeover...
They dressed up, got a backpack, and even danced with the stylists. It was cute! Carlie wasn't so sure about the dancing part...
Stop #3: California Pizza Kitchen! One of Kendyll's all time favorites (she used to call it the "black and white place"). She was so surprised and we had a fabulous dinner together, toasting the big kindergarten graduate. She even got a free meal for the occasion! (She of course told everyone who walked by that she was a kindergarten graduate...)
Overall, it was such a fun time with our sweet big girl. I laughed on the way home at myself...I go WAY overboard on every celebration, even though I really don't mean to when the planning begins. I hugged Mark and told him thank you for putting up with my parties. :) He and I agreed that it's worth it just for the memories. And, I can say for sure, that Kendyll felt incredibly honored. :) Now, Carlie's already asking what she gets to do when she finishes preschool on Thursday. Uh oh.
...And, the last surprise of the week, I didn't know about until we boarded the plane! Mark did a great job of keeping the surprise destination a secret all the way until the end. And, it was exciting to spend a few days with him---without children---to relax and explore....

Our Kindergartener
Next week marks the end of Kindergarten for Miss Kendyll. And, as usual, the time has flown, and I'm amazed at the changes we have seen in our six year old this year. You always hear that something changes forever when they begin school...and I expected it on some levels. But, as I look back at the beginning of school, I am amazed at how different she looks, and how much she has learned and grown since September!
*Physical and mental growth!! It's crazy how much she has changed physically! She's taller, older, and I guess, wiser. :) Here she is the first day of kindergarten...
*Becoming an individual... I still remember a few things from grad school, and one of those is the different stages of development in childhood. This one that Kendyll is in is all about becoming an individual. And, she has definitely started down that road to desiring her own choices and preferences...from food, clothes, activities, and even the way I fix her hair. Before this year, I pretty much made most of those choices for her and she never even noticed. And, I would say that watching her want to be "her own person" has been very hard for me! I continue to try to balance what is okay for her to decide (at the ripe old age of SIX), and what should still be up to me. And, it's been an interesting journey in that way. :) I have had to learn to let go of some things, and she has had to learn what it means to still be "the kid" on some things. But, we're both learning. :)
Parent Perks
A couple of fun memories of our year was getting to have one-on-one time with Kendyll throughout her year. For me, I got to have her at home three days of each week. It was a unique situation that has made for great memories for our family. Early in the year, we were much better about using those days for field trips and activities , but even as the year went on, when we were just running errands or staying at home, I still loved the extra time with her.
Some of our favorite things from our "Mommy and Kendyll" days were: going to the art museum, the farm, the library (often!), the aquarium, doing lots of arts, crafts, painting, and experiments, and always having girly lunches (her favorite pick was always Celebrity Bakery, Paradise Bakery, or Corner Bakery...notice the theme...girly and "bakery").
For Mark, the "parent perk" was getting to be a part of Indian Princesses with Kendyll. The daddy-daughter trips they went on will go down as some of their favorite memories, and definitely marked the beginning of new activities in our family. This is where the inspiration for fishing and camping came from!
They did everything from picnics in the park, to overnight campouts, to horseback riding, to campfire cookouts. Providence also has a program called "First Thursday", where all the dads come to lunch with the students on the first Thursday of each month. Mark made a point to go to lunch with Kendyll ALOT this year, and this was always such a treat for her.
Overall, this has been an incredible school year and I'm so thankful for my little soon-to-be first grader. I know this is just the beginning of even more changes in Kendyll, and we are praying constantly that the Lord equips us to be her parents! We love you, Kendyll Grace, and are so incredibly proud of you!
